Le titre donne le ton avec son tempo nonchalant et son atmosph\u00e8re hypnotique et est suivi par \u00ab\u00a0Ranhansha\u00a0\u00bb de Yumi Murata (sorti en 1979), qui apporte une touche plus funk \u00e0 cette s\u00e9lection, puis par les rythmes plus feutr\u00e9s de \u00ab\u00a0Bagdad No Atari Nite\u00a0\u00bb du groupe L-E-V-E-L qui annonce le virage plus synth\u00e9tique du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1980. La face A se conclut avec \u00ab\u00a0Lake In The Forest\u00a0\u00bb de GAM, un titre aux accents reggae \u00e9l\u00e9gants datant de 1980 et interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par plusieurs musiciens du groupe japonais culte Arakawa Band. La face B s\u2019ouvre par un saut vers la fin des ann\u00e9es 1980 avec \u00ab\u00a0Mitsumeteirunoni\u00a0\u00bb de Nami Shimada, un superbe titre electro-funk mid-tempo suivi par le son folk-soul organique du groupe Bread &amp; Butter et son \u00ab\u00a0Memory\u00a0\u00bb, initialement paru en 1974 sur le label Blow Up Records. Le titre r\u00e9unit un v\u00e9ritable who\u2019s who de la sc\u00e8ne musicale japonaise, avec notamment Haruomi Hosono, Ray Ohara, Tatsuo Hayashi et Shigeru Suzuki. L\u2019instrumental \u00ab\u00a0After Image\u00a0\u00bb du clavi\u00e9riste Minoru Koyama apporte une touche cin\u00e9matique aux accents jazz-fusion, tandis que \u00ab\u00a0Island Cuckoo\u00a0\u00bb de Chikara Ueda &amp; The Power Station, sorti en 1979 sur Denon, injecte une dose de funk matin\u00e9e d\u2019influences br\u00e9siliennes. La compilation se clos sur le superbe titre funk-folk \u00ab\u00a0Anata Wa Doko Ni Irundesuka\u00a0\u00bb du groupe Higurashi, un titre introspectif de 1974 qui conclut le voyage sur une note plus \u00e9motionnelle. Tokyo Pulse offre un instantan\u00e9 saisissant de l\u2019\u00e9volution des grooves tokyo\u00eftes, en embrassant une grande diversit\u00e9 de styles allant du funk \u00e0 la modern soul, en passant par la folk, le reggae, l\u2019electro et une pop aux accents jazzy. Soigneusement s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 par DJ Notoya, l\u2019album capte les subtiles \u00e9volutions qui ont marqu\u00e9 de musique japonaise durant les ann\u00e9es 70 et 80.
