Une rencontre dans un tramway entre Jason Noble et Christian Frederickson d\u00e9clenche une s\u00e9rie d\u2019\u00e9changes \u00e0 distance, de cassettes bricol\u00e9es et de partitions griffonn\u00e9es, alors que leurs vies s\u2019enchev\u00eatrent entre \u00e9tudes au Peabody Conservatory, escapades en Suisse, gal\u00e8res new-yorkaises et nuits comme plongeur \u00e0 Louisville. \u00c0 cette folie g\u00e9ographique s\u2019ajoute Rachel Grimes, d\u2019abord p\u00e9dagogue musicale improvis\u00e9e, puis pianiste \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re et pilier du projet \u2013 qui portera son pr\u00e9nom. En marge des groupes Rodan ou The Coctails, les membres recrutent \u00e0 l\u2019instinct : musiciens classiques, punks lettr\u00e9s ou bruiteurs indociles. Entre rigueur et libert\u00e9, ils enregistrent ce qui deviendra Handwriting, un premier album intense, semi-improvis\u00e9, paru chez Quarterstick Records en 1995. Plus qu\u2019un disque, Handwriting est le fruit d\u2019un processus artisanal et chaotique, tiss\u00e9 par une poign\u00e9e d\u2019artistes nomades r\u00e9unis autour d\u2019une id\u00e9e commune : composer une musique libre, profonde, inclassable.
